The Morning after Tikkie!

The Morning after Tikkie!

I can’t take credit for this story. It’s too unique and too specific. When my friend told me about it the first time I laughed until I couldn’t breathe anymore. I was in shocked. For all of you that are confused by the title, it is a game of words “the morning after pill” “the morning after Tikkie,” got it?

A small joke. But if you are like me and don’t live in Holland. You probably have never, ever heard about the application Tikkie. Let’s change that! Tikkie is a very popular app among the Dutchies. It speaks a lot about the culture of the country. It’s an app that allows you to divide a check after a night out with friends in equal parts including the cents! I’m not sure if I’m a fan of this philosophy. But they love it. You can ask for money for a gift, a dinner party, (I think you get the point) without revealing your personal bank account information. This last part is useful.

So now that we have that part clear. Let’s get to the juicy side of the story. My girl went on a first date when she was very new in the country. She wanted to have fun and why not? To have some taste of the local cousin, if you know what I mean. But during the date she didn’t find the guy very attractive, the chemistry wasn’t there. So at the end of the night when it was the time to pay the bill the next conversation emerged:

My friend— Hey let’s split the bill
Guy X — No, don’t worry I got it
My friend— No, I insist let’s split it, please
Guy X — No, like I said I got it don’t worry

So, as you can see my girl really try but the guy was persistent. So what she could do? She was not planning on dating him again but if the guy is insisting on paying there is only so much you can push without sounding rude. So they say goodbye, everybody went on their separate ways.

The next morning my poor friend wakes up with a FUCKING TIKKIE on her phone! To all the Dutchmen that are reading this, and men in general this is unacceptable! My girl didn’t know what a Tikkie was. She runs downstairs, to ask her flatmate at the time what was the meaning of the text. She was a Turkish girl. Let’s explain something about the culture of Turkish women. They are raised with the mentality that men are supposed to provide everything for them, and they should be treated like princesses.

Obviously, after explaining the meaning of the application to my poor friend, her flatmate was even more offended than her. She wanted my girl to block and erase the guy. My dear friend was raised better. So she lectured the guy. She explained why this was so wrong to do to a woman because the guy had the audacity to ask for a second date! As if after sending a Tikkie that could ever happen!

To all of you Dutchmen! You will never get a second date with a woman that isn’t Dutch if you do this. If a woman asks you to split the bill on the restaurant/bar and you say “I got it” don’t be a cheap bastard and send the next day a fucking Tikkie! Especially without a warning! Rude! Lack of manners! If this behavior is part of your culture, I apologize to Holland as a country for these but what is wrong with your country?

Why can you just pay one round and the next one a different person pays it? Or next time you see someone you pay it? I get it when you are a big group it saves time and headaches, but for one or two people/friends that you see often? I don’t get it. I guess it’s a cultural difference. Maybe it’s something we can discuss over the chat. Again I apologize if I sound rude. But come on, even if you are a local you need to admit that this wasn’t a smart move as a man to get a second date! Don’t you?

XOXO

  2. In my case is not the Tikkie app is the way the use it! #lol I agree with you Lucy why not just buy a beer or coffee the next time you see a person instead of asking for such low amounts of money? I think the cultural difference is a fact! I think every expat has a funny introduction story with the Tikkie haha advertising to the company without getting pay so sad! XD
